CtryLuv's Crabbie Cove Naked Crabbie Care
A naked hermie is a hermie who has left his shell for whatever reason. There are a few reasons a crabbie will leave his shell, none of them good.
Temperature - If your crabbie gets too hot they will leave their shell in an effort to cool down.
Irritation - Something is inside the shell causing irration to your crabbies tender abdomen or other body parts.
Low humidity - If the humidity is too low, a hermie could leave its shell in order to try to breathe.
Weakness - If a hermie is ill or weak, sometimes they will leave the shell because its too heavy for the crabbie to move around.
What can I do?
The best thing you can do is to keep the hermie comfortable. Raise the humidity so that he doesnt dry out. Make sure he has plenty of places to hide, and keep it warm and dark. It is a good idea to ISO a naked crabbie so that other crabs cant mess with him. Without his shell he is totally vulnerable. Check his shell to see if there is something that could irritate or rub him. Make sure there are plenty of suitable shells close by so that he can move into should he choose to.
You can also try the cup method. Place the hermie and his shell (after its been cleaned and rinsed) into a small cup. Naked hermies tend to run around, and if they are placed in an area where they have to confront the shell, they might go ahead and move back in.
Last but not least you can try putting the hermie back into his shell. Rinse the hermie and his shell with dechlorinated water and slowly carefully ease the crabbie back into the shell. I dont recommend this except as a last resort as I believe the stress on the crabbie involved could be too great.
